THE HERO AS PROPHET MAHOMET AND ISLAM                           ‫ﻱ‬

Heaven he had found it all out. He was in doubt and darkness       ""_ ٧‫ﺇ‬
no longer. All those idols were nothing. There was only one
God in and over all that we must look to. He is the reality not     ‫ﺍ‬
wooden idols. He made us and sustains us. Allah Akbar God
is great. Mohmet's whole soul was set on flame with this grand
truth. Providence had unspeakably honoured him by revealing
it, saving him from death and darkness.

He felt bound to make it known to all creatures in all lands:
This is what is meant by the phrase Mahomet is the Prophet
of God.

Kadijah believed in him and sustained him. She, along with his
slave, Saad, and his young cusin Ali, Abu Thaleb's son, were
his first converts. He spoke his doctrine to many men but
most treated it with ridicule and indifference. In three years he
had gained but thirtee followers. He naturally gave offence to
the koreish, keepers of the caabah, but one or two men of
influence joined him and slowly his doctrine began to spread.
He spoke the word among pilgrims and followers but was
always in great danger. The good Kadijah had passed on so had
Abu Thaleb. He had to fly fom place to place, hide in caverns
and escape in disguise ? he was a hunted man. His enemies
banded together sworn to take his iife and he had to flee
Mecca to the place called Medina, across two hundred miles of
