indeed as if it were not Hebrew because it contains such a
noble universality ? greater than sectarianism or even
patriotisn.
It has been from the ancient Caabah stone and the well which
Hagar found with little Ishmael in the Wilderness, and the
Sacredness attached to them, and the pilgrimages of all the
tribes, that Mecca took its rise as a Town. From Delhi to
Morocco the eyes of the faithfulpraying are turned toward the
KEBLAH, five times this day and all days, one of the most
notable centres in the Habitation of Men.
In 570 of our era Mahomet was born; he was of the family of
Hashem of the oreish treibe. He lost his father at the age of
si and his mother too, He was brought up by his grandfather,
a good old man who was one hundred years old, and he loved
the little orphan boy greatly. After the old man's death he was
brought up by his uncle, Abu Thaleb, who was a just and
rational man. Mahomet was brought up in the best Arab wa.y
As he grew older he travelled with his uncle to the various
faires of Syria and other countries. At fourteen the lad was
quick-witted and an astute obsevrer of the larger world around
him.
We must not forget that he had no what we call school
