Eleven shops were cut in order to make a road, wide enough for motor traffic, through the
Brokers Bazaar and nine houses were cut in Halat Bu Mahir to make a road linking Halat Bu Mahir
with Shara al Moawadah. During the year seven main roads were surfaced with cold patch and a
number of dangerous corners were improved.
Work was begun on building a new covered market, by Shaikhs Sulman and Abdul Aziz, sons
of His Excellency Shaikh Mohammed bin Isa, who own the fish, vegetable and fruit markets. The
removal of the present market, which is unsanitary and unsatisfactory, to the new building will do
much to improve both the appearance of the entrance of the town and the conditions under which
                        food is sold.
The Municipality built during the year a line of four flats, for letting, above the Municipal
shops near the pier. A loan of Rs. 50,000 was granted to the Municipality by the Government for
this object. The Municipality undertook the work of adapting a large Arab house in the centre of
the town, which was purchased by the Government, as a new hospital for women, it also carried out
alterations to the house of Shaikh Daij bin Shaikh Hamad which was bought by the Government
as a new Kindergarten (boys) school.
The usual routine work which was done throughout the year included, town cleaning, oil spray
ing, town lighting, pauper burials, repair and upkeep of public wells, drains and washing places,
slaughter houses, latrines, rubbish bins, etc., supervision of shop scales, foodstuffs on sale in the markets,
coffee shops and khans, and the distribution of ration cards among the people of Muharraq and the
                        villages on that island.

The Municipal Council met 19 times during the year and sub-committees met on 39 occasions.

                                                HEDD MUNICIPALITY

The total revenue was Rs. 9,085 of which 70 per cent was a grant from the Government. There
was some increase in the collection of Municipal taxes due to the payment during the year of arrears
from 1365. Revenue and expenditure were approximately equal. The largest item of expenditure
was Rs. 4,400 which was sp-ent on town cleaning. Apart from removing portions of houses on the
main road to widen narrow comers the Municipality confined its activities to routine work.
