The most important work which was carried out by the department was the repairing of Ain
Mahazza, the principal spring on the island of Sitra. The cost of the work was borne by the owners
of the gardens which are irrigated by the spring, many of the gardens being Wakf property. About
Rs. 6,000 was spent on this project. The spring was as far as possible drained and the surrounding
walls were mended and the leaks were stopped. The garden owners paid for the work over a period
of six months from its completion.

A few pieces of property were bought, most of the purchases consisted of the acquisition of
shares in gardens which were predominantly Wakf.
The department made the arrangements for sending three young men, from suitable families,
to study religion and religious law in Iraq. These students’ expenses were borne partly by Wakf
funds and partly by a grant from the Government.
