Rent of Government Land.—Rents collected during the year amounted to Rs. 9,569 on
account of 325 plots of land including 10 plots on long leases and 4 plots let to the R.A.F. Three
more leases have been concluded for 99 years for plots of land in Manama and two for 15 years at
Rafaa Camp.
The shops on Barrett Road, leased to the Food Controller, and to Messrs. A1 Ajaji have been
dismantled.
Sales of Government Land.—Rs. 1,97,192-4-0 was realized from sale of Government land.
Altogether six pieces were sold, the two important ones being sold to Messrs. Petroleum Concessions
Limited and to Messrs. Gray, Mackenzie & Company Limited. These are described above.
Fish Traps.—Rs. 113 was collected as rent of fish trap sites mostly as an experimental
measure and at nominal rent. One established site for a trap in Sitra, Wadian, was rented for Rs. 230
but the lease was eventually cancelled owing to the objection of Messrs. The Bahrain Petroleum.
Company that the trap interfered with boat traffic in the channel. Rs. 678 was collected for renewal
of fish trap licenses.
Assessment of Houses for Rent.—58 cases of rent assessment were dealt with during the
i
year, 52 were in Manama and the rest were in Muharraq. Of these 41 were received through the Agency
Court, 9 through the Bahrain Courts and 8 direct from owners and tenants. In most cases the rent
was raised after the assessment, in one instance by 250 per cent. Generally the rent of houses occupied
from 1363, or before, was increased and those occupied in 1364, or later, decreased. Some houses
were occupied by two families and in one instance the tenant was found to be subletting the second
storey for a higher amount than he was paying for the whole of the house to the owner,
290 cases for verification of titles and 33 objections in response to registration notices were
referred to Bahrain Courts, of these only 49 remained in the Courts at the end of the year.
27 properties were put in auction on behalf of Bahrain Courts.
Barrett Road, from the roofed bazaar at the North to the Catholic Church on the South, a
distance of 2000 feet was surveyed and large scale maps were prepared in connection with a project
for cutting a wide road through the town from north to south. It was found that the line of the road
was interrupted by some Shia Mosques and a number of Matams. An attempt to widen the road by
cutting all or any of these religious buildings is likely to produce strong protests from the
Shia community.
