Financial Position.—Losses have occurred owing to the enforced retention of old plant which
required an excessive expenditure on spare parts and also to its low factor of mechanical efficiency.
Other losses have occurred owing to the unfavourable tariffs allowed to three major bulk consumers
and the cost of the hire and operation of the 20 ton Water Distillation Plant at the Naval Base, Jufair.
The hiring of this plant was imperative owing to the fact that one new generating set could not be
operated on the local well water owing to its heavy scale forming characteristics. It also had to be
run for a period of 16 months on an open cooling circuit as the plant for operation of a closed circuit
had not been received from the manufacturers. The average consumption under these conditions
was approximately i,ioo gallons per 24 hours and the cost of production was 2.1 As. per gallon.
Distribution.—The re-siting and replacement of three old sub-stations was completed during
the year as follows
One in Muharraq and two in Manamah. In each case the transformer capacity will be increased
when the equipment is available to provide for additional consumers and also to improve the distribu
tion voltage. A further sub-station is now being erected in Manamah to complete the scheme planned
in 1365. Owing to a heavy short circuit in the Muharraq sub-station during rainy weather, there
was a breakdown of the High Tension fuses and three phases of the outgoing High Tension Net work
line. The Low Tension cable of “ BELGRAVE FEEDER " was short circuited in the power station
compound by coolies working on building excavation. This was repaired by means of a junction
box insertion. During a storm, one standard carrying both power and telephone lines was blown
down causing considerable damage and requiring the replacement of one span. Two standards broke
down at their bases owing to the corrosion and caused a temporary interruption of power supply.
Five power line net work conductors were broken owing to age and wind but without causing any
damage to life or property.
Extension To Power House Main and Auxiliary Plant.—
(а) To improve distribution voltage in Muharraq Town an L. T. ring main was provided
to link in with the existing supply system.
(б) A three phase, three span line was run from Gudhaibia sub-station to the new houses
of Messrs. Gray Mackenzie & Company on the Jufair Road.
(c) Installation of two lighting sets of 1.5 and 22 kW with the necessary pole line, net work
was completed at Jidda Island and Rafaa Palace respectively. The number of spans
at Jidda Island was twelve and the number at Rafaa was four ; each of 200 feet in
length.
New Load.—Additional connections during the year amounted to 83.700 kW as comp
with 265.800 kW during 1365. Details are as follows:—
1. Light, fan and plug points '.. 44.775 kW.
2. Power......................................... 28.825 „
3. Refrigeration...............................
1.350 a
4. Air Conditioning .................... 8.750 »
83.700 kW.
Connected load at the end of 1365 1,301.300 „
Total at the end of 1366 .. 1,385.000 kW.
Revenue from Electriclty.-The revenue from units sold during 1366 amounted to
Rs. 3,06,613/5/- as compared with Rs. 2,72,488/8/- in 1365 being an increase of Rs. 34»I24/*3/*,#
New Consumers.—70 new consumers were connected during 1366 of which 58 were in Mana
mah and X2 in Muharraq. The total number of consumers is now 2,039.
