In 1960, as a further step to postal independence, a definitive
issue was commissioned. The lower values were the work of M. C.
Farrar-Bcll; and, in a volume entitled “Persian Gulf Drawing Book” in
the National Postal Museum, arc two unaccepted designs. The first
shows a marked resemblance to the previously issued ‘Local’ stamps but
the denomination is shown, in English and Arabic, as ‘Nayc Paisc’.

The denominations of the other Essay, although inscribed ‘25 NP’
(Naye Paisc = New Paisa) in English, is inscribed in Arabic ‘25 Naye’
(= 25 New)! The issued stamps bear the English inscription ‘NP’ and
the Arabic ‘Baizat’ (= Paise).
The new stamps were issued on July 1st, 1960, and all showed a
full face portrait of the Ruler. Although the G.B. overprinted stamps
were withdrawn from sale they remained valid for postage, and com
bination use is known: indeed, they are also known used in conjunction
with the 1964 definitives as late as August 1964.
A new set of “Local” stamps appeared the following year. The 5
NP represented the printed paper rate, 10 NP the internal letter rate
and 40 NP the registration fee; the remaining values — 15, 20 and 30
NP - did not represent any particular postal rate. The 5 NP and 10 NP
sold out long before the other values and were not reprinted as Shaikh
Suleman died the same year.
