be sent in the Diplomatic Bag to the Political Residency in Bahrain for
posting, rather than to the nearby Dubai Post Office.
The 1949 U.P.U. and 1950-51 definitives, surcharged as before,
were also issued in Dubai and both types of the 1 Via. and Festival Rs2
arc also found used here. The Coronation and Q.E.II definitives followed
between December 1952 and January 1954 and the re-issues on St.
Edward’s Crown watermark paper in 1956—57. Almost all the used copies
of the 1 Via. of the latter series were from Dubai

Type 14.
By this time the Parcel Post canceller (Type 14) had come into use;
but it is very rarely seen.
All the printings of the Rs2 and Rs5 surcharges on the G.B.
“Castles” were valid for use in Dubai, but the De La Rue Crowns-only
high-value surcharges of 1961 were not placed on sale there as they only
became available after the G.B. surcharged stamps had been withdrawn
in January 1961. A few copies of the “wide” variety on the first
surcharge on the Waterlow 5s. were used in Dubai.
In common with other Gulf States, Dubai adopted the new Indian
decimal currency in 1957, and the low value G.B. stamps were re-issued
with surcharges in “NP” on April 1st. 1957; the Scout Jubilee Jamboree
set followed on August 1st.
It is not known with certainty which of the subsequent issues
surcharged on Crowns-only paper were actually sold in Dubai — probably
only the 1,3, 6, 12,15, 20 and 40 NP which all appeared in 1960. The
remainder (50 NP to Rs5, and the new values 5,10 and 30 NP) were not
available until after the surcharged stamps had been withdrawn; but they
