All these essays included the portrait of the then Ruler, Shaikh Ali
bin Abdullah bin Jassim A1 Thani, K.B.E., who had succeeded on his
father’s abdication on account of old age in 1949; but, by the time the
final designs had been approved, it was apparent that ill-health must force
Shaikh Ali to abdicate, and the issue was postponed. In fact, he did
abdicate in October 1960, and the definitives were eventually issued on
September 2nd, 1961, with the portrait of his son, Shaikh Ahmad bin
Ali A1 Thani, who succeeded him. Shaikh Ahmad was deposed and
succeeded by his cousin, Shaikh Khalifa bin Hamad al Thani, in 1972.
