Abu Dhabi is by far the largest of the erstwhile Trucial States
now absorbed into the United Arab Emirates and covers an area of
some 24,000 square miles. It extends 250 miles along the coast from
Khor Odaid at the base of the Qatar peninsula to Ras Hasian, 40 miles
west of the port of Dubai, and stretches inland from 100 to 200 miles.

Other than in the town of Abu Dhabi, where is situated the Ruler’s
old Palace - a large picturesque fort which is featured on the R1 and
Rs2 of the 1964 definitives - the only settled populations are in the
Liwa and Buraimi Oases. Liwa — more correctly ‘al Jiwa’ — lies a
hundred miles inland from the coast and covers an area measuring 50
miles long and 10 miles wide. This tract of desert is dotted with
numerous small date gardens lying between high red sand dunes and there
are many small villages alongside the gardens.
