The Buraimi Oasis lies due Bast of Abu Dhabi town, about 100
miles from the coast and at the North end of a long ridge known as Jabal
Hafit. There arc eight villages in the area, six belonging to Abu Dhabi
and two to the neighbouring Sultanate of Oman. Extensive date and
vegetable gardens arc watered by ancient man-made underground
channels known in Arabia as ‘Falaj’, in Persia as ‘Kanat' and in Pakistan
                      as ‘Karez’.
Buraimi came into the news in August 1952 when Hamasah, one of
the villages belonging to Oman, was occupied by a Saudi Arab force,
later to be driven out by the Trucial Oman Scouts with the co-operation
of the then Sultan of Muscat and the Ruler of Abu Dhabi.
A1 'Ain (The Spring) was the largest of the villages and, since
1967, has rapidly expanded to a large town served by a dual carriageway
                      from Abu Dhabi Town.
