Another canceller (Type 3) was registered in the Proof
Impression Books in the G.P.O. in London on May 4th, 1964,
but does not appear to have been much used before April 1965.
The Parcel Post cancellers (Types 4 and 5) were also introduced
about this time but there is no local record of the exact date. A
later version of Type 5 had only “ABU DHABI” in the bottom band.
Although not so inscribed, the three Hawk stamps issued on
March 30th, 1965 were intended to commemorate the anniversary of
the establishment of the postal service. These hawks are sull used for
hunting “Hubara” (McQueen’s Bustard) throughout Eastern Arabia,
and all three designs show birds unhooded and ready for flight from
the gloved wrist of the falconer.
In the ‘Persian Gulf Drawing Book’ at the National Postal
Museum there are two examples of original art work for the 20NP
and 40NP; both are in blue (background), brown and black. The
former bears a MS note “Values and all lettering brown” and is signed
