The Red Well-Read Reader
Story 243
Fraught with Trickiness
The teacher said, “Class, I’m ready to teach, if you’re ready to be taught.
“We ought to start with “ought,” usually spelled ought but sometimes aught.
Likewise, nought – meaning nothing – may be spelled nought or naught.
“Never say catched for caught. Never say buyed for bought, nor brung
for brought, nor fighted fought. However, you may say either worked or
wrought.
“Now, class, is it thinked or thought? Is goodness seeked or sought? And
with a “gh” is a rope held tau(gh)t?

For Santa Claus
Because
Of his cause
To give gifts to the Mc Graws
And to others who keep their momma’s laws
