School Context

Madiba Comprehensive School is situated in Kagiso, which is located in the West

Rand. Kagiso is a township in Krugersdorp; the crime rate is not alarming but is still a
major issue as well as violence in the area. The statistics show that Kagiso falls

under top 30 places in South Africa that has the violent stabbing reports. Poverty is

rife and generally the socio-economic conditions are very frustrating emotionally,
               spiritually and physically.

               Socio economic Conditions

The gap between the middle class and the poor is not that wide, but you do have
some areas that is occupied the upper middle class that shows a gap regarding

income between the rich and the poor. The socio-economic conditions in some parts

around Kagiso such as Vlakfontein, 2 and 3, Munseville and Swanneville where
some learners come from do not have access to municipal services.

Furthermore, connecting with learners in the classroom is a challenge because the

learners imagination is running not because the class is not interesting but because
they are thinking about food or reminded of being subjected to hunger every time

they go home which results in stress, depression, engaging in unhealthy behaviour
and mostly having to be breadwinners and feeling that there is more value in being

outside school trying to earn or make a living than being in the school environment.

So this results in only few having life goals and with wishes to further their studies.

of reading in those poverty stricken communities and places around Kagiso and
