INTRODUCTION
“ADAPTABILITY CREATES STABILITY”
- Reid Hoffman and Ben Casnocha
Our working environments may change overnight, as the previously
wonderful boss moves into the executive ranks, bringing in an
unexperienced replacement supervisor. A flexible work schedule that fits
you perfectly may be replaced with a more restrictive one that reflects the
new management focus on a “tight ship.” Or a change in leadership style at
the top may result in fewer opportunities for growth and initiative throughout
the rest of the organization.
Or we change. We outgrow a job we once loved, yearning instead for the
exhilaration of a new type of nursing work. The longer you work, the likelier
it is that the nursing career that you start with will go through many changes.
The reality is that you can’t rely on any employer to be “loyal” to you – that
is, provide lifetime employment – because just like you, they have no idea
what the future will hold. They may need to close your department, lay off
staff because of mergers, cut your hours because of new budget priorities,
or transition you into positions that suit the organization’s needs rather than
yours. None of this is personal – it’s simply how organizations work.
Things change, life changes, you change. And approached with the right
attitude, that can be terrific. The trick is to create a career that can match
you change for change, can keep up with your growth, can continue to offer
you new opportunities and new challenges. The key here is to understand
that, in the long run, we are all self-employed.
