FOCUSING ON EMPLOYABILITY,
ADAPTABILITY AND
RESILIENCY
Focusing on your long-term employability is the best way to make sure you
have solid job options throughout your nursing and/or nursing management
career. But how do you do that? First and foremost, you make sure that
your loyalty is to your own professional goals, rather than to your employer.
Needless to say that you’ll always do your very best job for your employer,
you want to be sure to keep your own career goals moving forward at the
same time.
The easiest way to practice this long-term employability mindset is to have
your own career agenda firmly in place. That means that you always have
an eye out for times when you can:
• respond to new opportunities within your organization;
• expand your skills to keep up with new technologies, disciplines, and
processes;
• demonstrate your ability to transition from an area of fewer opportunities
to one of greater demand;
• continue to build up a track record of taking initiative, creating solutions,
and taking on increasing responsibility; and
• develop a career that reflects who you are, what you value, and how
you want to contribute, for as long as you want to do so.
By rethinking nursing work in terms of the broadest possible application of
your skills, and then choosing how you’ll deploy those skills for the greatest
personal reward, you can redefine your universe of career possibilities. You
can have a resilient career.
