WHAT DOES A RESILIENT
CAREER LOOK LIKE?
A resilient career is one that enables you to work for as long as you’d
like, doing work you love, with an appropriate level of salary and benefits.
Ideally, it will offer you the amount of challenge you thrive on, opportunities
for learning and growth, and rewards of value to you. And, when necessary,
it should provide you with enough professional independence to leave an
unhealthy work situation for a healthier one if needed.
The ability to bounce back, to recover from setbacks, to shift and adapt and
reinvent – these are some of the capabilities that define a resilient career.
Or put another way, a resilient career is one that is:
• Agile – able to move quickly in many different directions , and to quickly
develop necessary skills or knowledge to do so
• Opportunistic – committed to finding or creating new opportunities to
contribute, add value, innovate, develop new solutions, or create new
career paths if old ones fall away
• Sustainable – able to engage you and reward you both financially and
emotionally
• Meaningful – it enables you to bring your core values and passions to a
purpose bigger than your paycheck, whether right now or as a direction
in which you’re heading
How do you create an agile, opportunistic, sustainable, and meaningful
career? By improvising. Since no one can know what’s going to happen
next week let alone next year, our best bet is to expect the best outcomes
but plan for the worst. Focus on keeping your career in “permanent beta,”
and an eye out for changes possibly heading your way.
In short: focus on the actions and attitudes that will help you, as the
Japanese proverb goes, fall down seven times but get up eight.
