Although English is the official language in Singapore, you may

notice some unfamiliar words here and there. Singaporean
communicate quite differently from other English-speaking

countries due to the fact that the population in Singapore is mostly

Singlish, a colloquial, uniquely Singaporean dialect of English,

is common to hear and is considered by many to be a reflection

of the island's unique blend of cultures. On the other hand, you

won’t survive in the Lion city without getting familiar with Singlish.

I always believe the best way to get involved with the locals is to

talk like one of them. Just brushing up on a few common Singlish
phrases before departing to Singapore, so you don’t have to suffer

from understanding the locals.

新加坡的官方語言是英文，但真正落地新加坡，會發現明明跟當地人說英文，對話
中確時不時出現從來沒聽過的字彙跟說法。由於新加坡人口組成的特殊性 ( 華人、

馬來人、印度人是三大主要族群 ) 讓新加坡人使用的英文和一般英語系國家的標準

英文截然不同。我們把新加坡獨有、融合當地方言和慣用語的語言稱作「新加坡式

英文 ( 以下稱新式英文 )」，這個獅城通用的特殊腔調與用法被多數人視為是小島文
化的體現。換句話來說，如果不學會新式英文，你很難打入當地人的圈子。我認為

融入一種新的環境最快、也是最直接的方式就是學著怎麼向當地人一樣說話，使用

共通的語言。出發前至少先學會幾個常見的新式英文詞彙、甚至是習慣基本的新式

英文邏輯，能讓你更快速的適應和新加坡同事溝通的方式。
