Balancing Academics and Life Skills
Balancing Academics and Life Skills
In the ever changing modern life today, whether we should concentrate on providing
practical life skills more intensely or keep focus on the traditional academic subjects is
becoming one of the heated discussions within the educational field.
As we all know, traditional academic subjects have been going on through our twelve
years of school before we go to universities where we also learn academic subjects but more
blended with practical skills than high school. It is crucial for building the foundation for
fundamental understandings. Also, academic performances directly influence the students’
further progress in their career depending on the exam score when applying for
universities. However, not all students are academically inclined such as not all people
thrive to be a mathematician. Therefore, I believe excessive emphasis on academic learning
can be a waste of time for those whose paths do not cross with traditional subjects.
On the other hand, for the diverse needs and opportunities to thrive and succeed in
people's own way, practice life skills play an essential role. As it prepares for the
complexities of adulthood, it brings upon well-rounded individuals who are independent
and self reliant. For example, when students are living far away from their home during
college, knowing how to cook, maintaining financial stability and taking care of themselves
will be only the starter challenges awaiting. Furthermore, it may help the students to pick
up new hobbies, therefore encouraging them to unwind after spending many hours on the
theoretical subjects.
In conclusion, I firmly stand by the view that the importance of academic subjects and
practical skills are equivalent at some point and that is why we should not concentrate on
solely one area but both of them from a young age to contribute excellent individuals to
the society and to develop each person’s talent through it.
