THE ASHLEY BOOK OF KNOTS
3013. FIVE-STRAND SQUARE SINNET is made when five strands are
needed for a particular LANYARD KNOT such as the STAR KNOT. With
three strands in the left hand lead the upper left strand back, around,
through and down over one strand. Lead the right upper strand
back, around, through and down over two strands. rvluch the same
result is obtained by passing over one strand only with both left and
right strands. Roll underfoot or between boards.
3014. SEVEN-STRAND SQUARE SINNET is for the same purpose as the
above. Four strands are held in the left hand and three strands in the
right hand. The sinnet is made in two movements like the rest of
the sinnets given here. First, lead the upper left strand around in
back and then forward between the second and third strands from
the bottom and finally back parallel with its sister strands into the
lowest position of the group. Second, lead the right upper strand
around in back and forward between the center opposing strands
and then back parallel with its sister strands into the lowest position
of the group. Repeat these directions from the beginning, and roll
the sinnet thoroughly.
3015. COACHWHlPPING is made over stanchions and rails with two
or several parallel strands. Generally fishline is used. It is worked
as SQUARE SINNET 'II: 2999 but with two, sometimes three or even
four, strands as a unit, instead of one. Under some circumstances,
when the strands fail to cover the core or foundation, extra strands
are added with a sail needle.
3016. SIX-STRAND COACHWHlPPING. This is made as 'II: 301 I but with
doubled, tripled or quadrupled strands. This sinnet is almost invari-
ably made with the aid of a "mate" or helper. "Mate" is the preferred
name; it comes from "boatswain's mate." Sometimes the sinnet is
made as 'II: 3011 and the strands are doubled or tripled with a needle
as in a TURK'S-HEAD. COACHWHIPPING is also made as EIGHT-STRAND
SQUARE SINNET'll: 3001 with either doubled or tripled strands moved

as UnIts.
3017. This was, so far as I know, Captain Charles \V. Smith's in-
dividual method of making SQUARE SINl\ET. \Vith four strands. hold
three in the left hand and one in the right hand. First, lay the upper
left strand across the front to the center below its sister strand.
Second, lay the upper right strand across the front to the center
