PLAT SINNETS
two, over one, under two. Lead the left upper strand over one, un-
der one, over two, under one. Lead the right upper strand over one,
under two, over one, under one. Lead the left upper strand over
two, under one, over two. Lead the right upper strand under one,
over one, under two, over one. The visible parts on the face of this
sinnet pass regularly from the left, in a downward diagonal over
two and under one and from the right in a downward diagonal over
one and under two.
2999. SQUARE SINNET of four strands. Used for lanyards, whips,
whiplashes, quirts and leashes.
vVith strands of two colors, arranged as pictured, the two colors
helix around the sinnet, giving a barber-pole or candy-twist effect.
The sinnet is made in two movements.
First, take the top left strand, bring it around to the back of the
other strands and then from back to front between the opposing
strands. Finally lay it beside its sister strand into the lower position
at the left.
Second, take the right upper strand, bring it around to the back
of the other strands and then from back to front between the oppos-
ing strands. Finally lay it beside its sister strand into the lower
position at the right. In this size, this sinnet, although made by
the SQUARE SINNET method, is identical with ROUND SINNET of four
strands.
3000. The same sinnet as the above with the colored strands
differently arranged. Two strands of the same color are held in each
hand. The colors in the sinnet alternate and a scaly effect is secured.
Roll this sinnet underfoot and it will be round; pound it thor- 3000
oughly with a mallet, first one side, then the next adjacent side, and
it will be square. It is generally made by the SQUARE method as the
ROl;ND SINNET method (~302 I) is much slower.
3001. EIGHT-STRAND SQUARE SINNET. One of the best known and
most used of the sinnets. Often a core is added and is rolled, under
pressure, to form a Romm SINNET. Arrange with four strands in
either hand. Like the FOUR-STRAND SINNET, this is made in two
movements. First, lead the upper left strand, bring it around in back
of its sister strands, and from back to front between the center
of the opposing strands, and then down parallel with its sister strands,
into the lowest position in its own group. Second, lead the right
upper strand around back of its sister strands and from back to front '300 \
between the center of the opposing strands and down parallel with
its sister strands into the lowest position in the group.
If two colors are employed (white and green) and one color is
held in the left hand, the ot~er color in the right, the resulting
sinnet will have four alternate-colored vertical stripes, one at each
edge.
If the colors are arranged so that the four top strands are alike the
sinnet will have belts of alternating color.
The strands may be arranged with the two top left strands green,
the bottom white, the two top right strands white, the bottom green.
Or the strands may be alternated on the left side and arranged either
the same or opposite on the right side. The results are all distinctive.
This is the sinnet that has always been used for steam gaskets, and
until comparatively recent years it was made by hand.
