PLAT SINNETS
2984. Seven strands (five in left hand). Move left strand under
two, over two to center. Move right strand over two. Repeat the
two movements.
2985. Nine strands (five strands in left hand). Move left strand
under two, over two; move right strand the same.
2986. An ELEVEN-STRAND SINNET (six held in the left hand). Move
left strand under two, over three to center. Move right strand the
2981
same.
2987. ELEVEN-STRAND SINNET (six held in left hand). Move left
strand under two, over two, under one. Move right strand the same.
2988. A FIVE-STRAND FRENCH SINNET suggested by Captain Charles
Smith's SQUARE SINNET (~3017, ~30I8). Hold three strands in the
left hand. Lead left strand over two to center. (I). Lead right strand
over two to center. (2). Lead left strand under two to center. Lead
right strand under two to center. Repeat the four moves from the
start. As this requires no tucking under and over, it builds very
rapidly. But as it is folded in the center lengthwise, it must be
folded back and creased reversely in order to flatten it out.
2989. SIX-STRAND DUPLEX SINNET. Two superimposed THREE-
STRAND PLATS can be made simultaneously. Four strands are held in
the left hand. Lead the left strand over three to center. Lead right 2CJ8B
strand over two to center. Lead left strand under three to center.
Lead right strand under two to center. Repeat from the beginning.
This method may be carried farther with different numbers of
strands differently divided. Six strands equally divided and worked
in the same way gives a sinnet the same as ~ 3003.
2990. The sinnets that have just been described have all had a
single cycle for each set of diagonals. The remaining FLAT SINNETS
of this chapter have two cycles for each set of diagonals, with the
exception of ~ 2998, which has three for each set of diagonals. That
is, each of these sinnets is made with either four or six distinct
movements.
A NINE-STRAND TWILL SINNET (five strands in the left hand).
Lead first the left and then the right upper strand under one,
over three. Follow this, first left and then right, under two, over
two. Then repeat from the start. Work carefully and very firmly.
2991. A TEN-STRAND TWILL SINNET (five strands in the left hand).
Although less individual, perhaps, than the last, this holds its shape
better. Lead the left strand over two and under two. Lead the right
strand over two, under two, and over one. Next lead the left strand
over two and under two, and lead the right strand over two and
under three.
Although banding has been recommended for general practice 2.'J'JO
work in these sinnets, when making them for practical use something
else will often be required. In small material nothing is superior to
fishline. For decorative purposes the colored cords mentioned on
page 20 will serve nicely. If a nicer material is needed it may be
found either in "notion" or "Oriental" shops. Small silk fishline is also 2991
obtainable.
