French Mulberry)
Callicarpa Americana is an open habit,
native shrub of the Southern United
States which is often grown as an
ornamental in gardens and yards.
American beautyberries produce large
clusters of purple berries, which birds and deer eat, thus distributing
the seeds.
Plant Size: Grows 3- 6’ tall and 4-6’ wide. Can grow 8-9’ tall in
favorable environment.
Evergreen/Deciduous: Deciduous Perennial
Light Needs: Part shade
Watering: Water deeply and regularly during the first
growing season to establish an extensive root system.
Water wise plant, low water use.
Blooms: Violet colored berries cover branches in fall
Key feature: Vibrant ornamental berries, cold and heat tolerant.
Attracts birds and butterflies. May not be deer resistant.
Pruning: Prune in late winter to shape and encourage new growth.
