WHAT’S NEW
WILD MUSIC
Sounds & Songs of Life
ild Music: Sounds & Songs of Life recently opened at Science
WWorks Hands-On Museum in Ashland, which will run through
Labor Day. Whales compose, bullfrogs chorus, songbirds greet the Your Neighborhood Bottle Shop
dawn, and people everywhere sing and dance. Visitors of all ages
will expand their understanding of what and who make music in all OP ENI NG AP RI L 2019
of nature. Through whimsical, hands-on activities, you will not only
hear music that surrounds them every day, but see and even feel it
as you explore human music as inspired by the music of other living
creatures—from tiny insects to giant whales.
Soundscapes invite visitors to explore sound and music from the ocean,
the forest and the city. You will learn the meaning of birdsong, whale
cries, see samples of instruments from around the world, experiment
with underwater sound, explore how music influences memory, and
more. In the Bioacoustic Lab, people experiment with the human voice
compared to other animals, specifically birds. A seven-minute video
demonstrates the way animals use sound to identify themselves, com-
municate, and form and nurture social groups.
ScienceWorks is partnering with Rogue World Music, the Schneider
Museum of Art, and the Ashland Independent Film Festival to provide
unique programming at the Museum for the exhibit’s duration.
Wild Music is originally a production of the Science Museum of
Minnesota, the Association of Science-Technology Centers, and the
University of North Carolina at Greensboro School of Music, with
major support from the National Science Foundation and additional
support from Harman International, Inc. and the NEC Foundation of
America.
