CASCADE GIRL BEE WEEKEND
MAY 18 AND 19, ASHLAND
Taste honey and mead from Oregon, and honeys from around the world at the Sixth Annual
Oregon Honey Festival. Observe honeybees working together to raise their families, learn the
meaning of their sounds and dances, and pet a fuzzy bee. Meet diverse beekeepers, including
kids from the Lakota Youth Beekeepers, who will share their unique understanding of bees and
offer their honey for purchase.
Kids can make seed bombs, roll-your-own candles, see bees in the hive and hands-on experi-
ence putting together hive components. Adults can learn about how mead is made, various
kinds of hives, therapies and remedies derived from hive products and the best therapeutic
plants to keep bees healthy.
Various presenters will talk about the Lakota Youth Program and their culture’s approach to
beekeeping, the challenges of commercial beekeeping, honeybee science, women’s roles in
beekeeping practices in antiquity, how to source, order and keep bees, how to catch a swarm.
Live music, honey mead, tasty treats and a silent auction (including pollinator art, Oregon
Shakespeare Festival tickets, beehives and more) round out the event.
Sunday’s event is 8 women, 8 careers, and 8 stories, combining the wisdom, authenticity and
humor of women involved in various aspects of bookkeeping and beekeeping education.
