                                               ABSTRACT

Quality is a vital criteria in today’s manufacturing industries. This research
discusses the self-checking method (quality related tool) improvement in a manufacturing
enterprise through a practical study. Self-checking is a discipline or a method that deal
with the behavior of sewing machine operators. This study uses main five factors that
impact on the self-checking method implementation namely Training and awareness
programs, Monitoring, Team effect, Motivation and Rewarding. These criterial measures
were made using literature. Statistical technique of structural equational modeling was
used in the analysis. Training and awareness and Motivation are proven to be significant
and they positively impact on self-checking method while Team effect only impacts
positively but does not become significant. The effect is negative in Rewarding and
monitoring. Therefore, it can be concluded that the training and awareness program and
motivational programs are very much important to change the behavioral intention of
machine operators towards the self-checking method. In the meantime, rewarding
programs should be adjusted in order to support the training and motivation programs.

1 INTRODUCTION secondary data and those were obtain from
the quality fail reports issued by the CIF (
Apparel industry greatly contributes to central inspection facility )of the plant.
the Sri Lankan export economy as many
buyers in the foreign market demand for our
       high quality products.

Emjay Penguin is one of the leading
quality apparel manufactures in Sri Lanka.
This study was related to Emjay
       International at Theldeniya. Nowadays the
company has allocated more cost on the
quality assurance. Sewing floor is the huge
       operation center within an apparel
       manufacturing plant and many quality
       inspection points are allocated here.
Therefore self-checking method has Figure 1: Distribution of defects type
       recently implemented where inspection has
become a part of machine operator’s This research focuses on investigating
responsibilities. Minimizing the reaching of main factors that impact on the success of
defective items to end checker by resolving self-checking process and improving
the quality issues within the sewing module existing self-checking method. Since it is a
itself is the main goal of the self-checking discipline that needs to be developed by the
process. Due to the mal-functioning of self- machine operators, main five factors were
checking method higher percentage of used in this study as training and awareness,
defects are incurred to sewing floor as motivation, team effect, monitoring and
shown in figure 1. This data belongs to rewarding.
