Typical formats at Scientific conference
Keynote (or plenary) presentations –often by a well-known speaker. Most delegates attend
these.
Panel sessions – with multiple presenters often discussing the same or related topics.
Poster sessions – a researcher explains a poster they’ve produced displaying a summary of their
research, usually a mixture of text with images, graphs, tables.
Conference paper presentations – Researchers present a paper and get feedback. These are
usually grouped into topics or parallel streams
An academic presentation
• Usually 15-20 mins for contributing talk with about time for 1-2 questions, so make sure
you understand the rule and go by the rule.
• The audience is usually students, academics, and statisticians that work in the industry.
• The talks are categorized by topic, so most of the audience will be at least somewhat
familiar with your topic.
• Your objective is to get people interested in your work in the research area.
6 Steps of planner a successful presentation
1. Determine your objectives
You need to know why you were there, what do you plan to do?
• To convince
• To teach
• To explain
• To report
• To propose
• To sell
Those are objectives that you need to design first before you do anything else.
2. Know your audience
You should know who your audience is. Because it will let you know how to dress And
how to use the tone of voice in speaking and you can know your audience by
