Ghanaian Wedding Explained

A Traditional Marriage is Some Parts of Ghana, Akan

First if a man meets a woman, he tells his parents to go and see the woman’s parents to make some

inquiries about the woman. The woman’s parents will then ask her whether she met a man and had
a conversation. If the answer is yes, the woman’s parents inform the man’s parents about the

conversation between the man and the woman.

After this, the man’s family makes a list for the wedding ceremony, which includes the amount of

money to give to the woman’s parents and the brothers-in-law. Sometimes the woman’s brothers ask

for a certain amount and the man’s family tries to negotiate. If they agree then the man and his

family pay the amount agreed to the woman’s brothers-in-law.

On the day of the wedding, the bride’s family presents three different women to the groom to choose

from. If the woman he loves is amongst the three women, he chooses her. If she is not, he waits until
they bring her out. After that, food and drinks are served, and everyone enjoys the wedding

ceremony. After that the groom takes his bride home.
