My Journey Through Adoption
My name is Laura. I am 29 years old and I want to share the story
of my adoption.
th
I was born on the 14 February 1988 at King’s College Hospital,
Denmark Hill. My mother’s name is Marion Rose Therese
Canavan. She was an auxiliary nurse, and born in Clapham,
th
Lambeth, on the 18 June 1965. Marion is 5’2 tall, medium build
with thick brown hair. Her eyes are blue and grey with fair skin and
rosy cheeks. Marion is a country girl and she has a wide warm
smile. I talk about my birth mother in the present tense because
she is still alive.
Marion met my father when he was 15 years old and had a close
relationship with him for 2 years. My father was called Clement
th
Valentine Hermery, born on the 28 April 1970. Clement was tall
with fair hair and blue eyes.
th
I have a half-sister called Mary. She was born on the 13 June
1986. Mary was also adopted though the London Borough of
Bromley.
I found out that my early life was a short stay at King’s College
th
Hospital Maternity Ward from 14 th to 19 February then taken into
th
th
foster care from 19 February to 13 April 1988.
I was happy when I was growing up but I soon realised that being
adopted was not as straightforward as it seemed. There were all
these unanswered questions I needed answered.
I have just found out that my birth mother lives about half hour
away, much closer than I thought.
