Lockdown Ramadan
by Ayan
The 24th April 2020 was the first day of Ramadan. Ramadan is a holy month for
the Muslim nation, fasting from daybreak to sunset.
It was a unique month of Ramadan. Everything changed in lockdown. The hardest
part was that all the mosques were closed, even churches, synagogues and all
other places of worship. The word Ramadan has taken a new meaning for many
Muslim people. In my family, we used to get together to exchange different kinds
foods.
I managed to find the ingredients I needed to make these.
We used to go to the mosque to pray a special Ramadan prayer. All of the sudden,
the government announced that families couldn’t visit each other. We had to
suddenly wear masks, couldn’t hug, couldn’t shake hands, couldn’t even kiss our
mums and dads or loved ones.
Day to day life became strange to many. I could not see my friends. I had to queue
for a long time while fasting and to my surprise supermarket shelves were empty.
I could not go to college and my library closed too. I was told I had to continue my
lessons online, but my computer broke down and my phone is unreliable, however,
I did my best.
Personally, this whole experience got me closer to Allah. Ramadan was even more
exciting than ever before. Everyone was at home so people had more time to read
the Quran, pray more and ask for forgiveness and mercy. Neighbours got to know
each other and did a great thing every Thursday, clapping the lovely nurses,
doctors and carers.
2020 is a year that everyone will be talking about for years to come. Alhamdulillah,
everything is the hands of Allah and we have to be grateful, and as they say “Life
is precious so make it useful.”
