               A PAIR OF DEHUA ‘CRANE AND LYRE’

210 | BONHAMS  Late Ming Dynasty, c. 1640-1660
               Each tripod vessel thinly potted with an
               elegantly flaring rim, delicately incised with a
               poem to the reverse and a crane and lyre to
               the obverse, covered overall in a glassy, ivory-
               white glaze, the base with a maker’s mark;
               together with the original S. Marchant & son
               catalogue.
               Each 10cm (3 7/8in) wide (3).

               Each inscribed: jin ri song jun xu jin zui, which
               could be translated as: ‘We must all get drunk
               at this farewell party’.

               Similar cups with the same marks have
               been illustrated by P.J. Donnelly, Blanc
               De Chine, London, 1969, no. 34A and
               by Rose Kerr and John Ayers, Porcelain
               from Dehua: A Catalogue of the Hickley
               Collection, Singapore, 2002, nos. 118 and
               119. Donnelly records the mark as that of the
               potter ‘Tsu Hsin’, whilst Gerald Davison, who
               also records it in his handbook of marks on
               Chinese Ceramics, no.1652, reads it as ‘Diao
               Yan’, Compassion.

               ARCHAISTIC INCENSE BURNERS

               Each set on three raised beast mask and paw
               feet, applied with twin clambering chilong
               handles, the body with a central incised key
               fret pattern band below a band of archaistic
               motifs in relief, the shoulder with four lug
               handles.
               15.5cm wide across the handles. (2).
