FANG JIU XIA
            Shanghai
            circa 1880-1925

One of the so-called “Nine Factories” in Shanghai, however this is now a rare mark to
come across. The mark is further complicated by the fact that branch shops were
opened under the same Fang Jiu Xia banner with an additional name as a suffix,
although this format was common among Shanghai silversmiths. The mark [left] is
for Fang Jiu Xia Run Ji.

It was quite common among the more established Shanghai silversmiths to open
                                   branches in this manner.

Sadly, though, few images of work from this silversmith are documented. This has
now become a focus of research to catalogue further images. This circa 1910 deep
dish is one of a pair and is superbly made. The use of a hammer textured frieze
indented into the rim is unusual. The ‘fenghuang’ [peacock] engraved motif is the
                                   work of a master.
