Page 368 - Chinese SIlver By Adrien Von Ferscht
P. 368
This close-up image of one of the cups shows the extraordinary amount of work that has gone into this set; the
enamel colours are almost iridescent. The meander motif incorporates a Buddhist “sauwastika” - a left-facing
symbol as opposed the right-facing “swastika” - Sauwastika is a Sanskrit word meaning “the little thing that is
auspicious”.
The combination of enamel work and silver, in particular from the 19th
century, has become highly prized by Chinese collectors and aficionados.
This teapot, two cups and their saucers were sold at auction in 2013 for
£20,000 inc. premium [$32,800].
