This jug almost takes one’s breath away; a dragon
serpent writhing in the sea [shèn] against a plain,
slightly matt silver urn, achieving an almost Art
Deco feel. This piece is both traditional and modern
and it is unlike most Chinese decorative items.
One of the finest pieces of Luen Wo silver,
this Monteith bowl is rare, inasmuch as very
few Monteith’s were made in China and
when they were they were almost always for
Scottish merchant families. It is also
ingeniously combines traditional Chinese
scenes with the tradition motifs normally
found on a Monteith to the point where they
coexist quite naturally.
