LUEN WO
42 Nanking Road, Shanghai
circa 1880-1940
Luen Wo was a prolific retail silversmith, mainly in the traditional style but is also recorded as having made
Peranakan -style traditional silver items from 1880 onwards including a barber’s bowl.
The circa 1890-95 hot water jug is quite
typical of Luen Wo at this time; the crab
stock handle is a particularly nice detail.
There’s even a hint of a Victorian style
drawing to a close and an Edwardian
style about to begin.
Of the same period, a cigar or cheroot
case with an equally “busy” repoussé
work traditional Chinese scene.
