SING KWONG [AKA: S.KWONG]
Hong Kong
circa 1900-1940
A retail silversmith, like many of its other contemporaries in Hong Kong and Shanghai, appears to have had
strict control over quality and design of items stocked under the S.Kwong and Sing Kwong marks.
The 5-piece tea and coffee set with a rosewood and silver presentation tray [above], all very much in the Art
Deco style and decorated, equally in the Deco-style, with contrasting matt-finish finely planished and highly
plain polished finishes. There are no Chinese decorative motifs on this piece; equally, the style of each piece is
not something one would have found in a European city. It was probably made in order to appeal to a fashion-
conscious home market and is also demonstrating that Sing Kwong is a Chinese silversmith with attitude; one
that strives to flaunt convention.
