            circa 1880-1940

Teh Ling was an incredibly important retail silversmith in
Peking. Based in Morrison Street, the prestigious
shopping street during the Republic period; it is now
renamed Wángfǔjǐng but originally the street formed part
of one of the ten aristocratic estates - Wang Fu meaning
                                                           “princely residence” and Jing “well”.

The location of the well is marked today by this bronze
                                                           plaque [left] in the pavement.

Teh Ling is known to have serviced many of the
foreign legations in Peking, including legation
personnel and military, making what could have
been just a retail silversmith’s shop an important
record of social history in Peking during turbulent
            times.

This original receipt is typical of many receipt
issued to US Marines that were returning to the
United States after their tour of duty and prior to the
            Japanese invasion.
