W.H.L. [SILVERSMITH’S FULL NAME UNDOCUMENTED]
Hong Kong
circa 1890-1920
Research continues in order to discover the
full identity of this mark; it is also somewhat
of a mystery mark as it is not clear whether
this was a retail silversmith or an actual maker
[or both].
While most recorded items bearing the mark
are small goods, there is no definitive style
that links them; one tea set does indicate an
ability to create something of quality and
character.
Strangely, there
appears to be a
propensity to create
items that contain
fluted forms. This
early 20th century
triple-fluted épergne
is quite typical.
This circa 1900
single flute
reticulated bud vase
with clear glass liner
has appeared
several times at
auction, both singly
and as a pair which
would indicate this
was a popular item at the time of manufacture. As with all W.H.L. items, it is well made.
