Whoever was behind the making of these pieces is
displaying an empathy with the subtleties neo-
classicism demands.
The Wu Hua punch bowl
[left] appears at first
glance as being exactly
what it is -a late 19th/early
20th century attempt at
the neo-classical.
However, because it was
created by a Chinese
artisan, it could be
questionable whether the
what appears to be half
acanthus leaf chasing is,
in fact, acanthus - it could
be a hybrid of a cross
between acanthus and
chrysanthemum leaf.
What the bowl succeeds
in doing well is being
grand. It was also quite
definitely made to go out
o f C h i n a , g i v e n i t s
“Sterling” mark.
