The two vignettes of sections of the rose bowl’s decoration show how Wu Hua has chosen to veer more towards
the true Chinese style rather than a pastiche version for Western taste. This also throws a question mark over
quite who the item was aimed at -
solely the West , the home
            Chinese market or both.

            The lobed reticulated dish [right]
on first sight may look similar to
            many examples produced by
            other Chinese silversmiths, but
this W u Hua piece has
            alternating segments containing
            Chinese ideograms that are
            integral to the overall fretwork.
