YU HUA
            Línxī Xian, Inner Mongolia
circa 1880-1920 [possibly earlier than 1880]

            An extremely rare silver mark.
Linxi is due south of Ulaanbaatar but nearer to Peking [175km]; it was on the Silk Road and was fairly strategic
during the Sung dynasty. It is an area where silver and copper mining still takes place

            Although this circa 1910 swing-
            handle reticulated basket is
            almost totally comprised of
            traditional Chinese decorative
            motifs, the overall style and
feel of this piece is remarkably
            different to contemporary
            Chinese silver baskets from the
            more traditional silver making
centres. The style is really quite
            d i f f e r e n t t o a n y o t h e r
            silversmith’s work of this
            period.

It is reasonable to assume Yu
            Hua was making silver for
            Peking, given its proximity.

            Linxi is administered by
            Chifeng city
