A CARVED TIANHUANG SEAL
19TH CENTURY
The seal is fnely carved at the top with a recumbent mythical beast with two
horns, fnely incised beard, mane and tail. The face of the seal is carved in raised
characters, Zengxiang suo de jin shi (Epigraphy obtained by Zengxiang).

Well-known for his knowledge of epigraphy (jinshi), the scholar-oficial Lu
Zengxiang (1816-1882), obtained the title of zhuangyuan on the thirtieth year of (seal face) (seal impression)
the Daoguang reign (1850) for achiving the highest score on the highest level of
the Chinese imperial examination.
