Wanagan Campsite is the first of only a few places all along the Mississippi River that really
sets you up nicely for a inspiring three or four perfect sites.
It has an ancient picnic table inside a huge log cabin style covering and a fire pit.
It’s rustic atmosphere with those logs makes you think mountain more than flatland and cer-
tainly it is a awesome feeling to camp, cook, eat and rest there.
This normally for most this is where some get ticks and others get bit, but May so far I had not
seen hide nor hair of ticks or mosquitoes.
Wanagan is also where most kayakers stop for breakfast or lunch and continue on. Because I
was new to this area and nervous already., I had planned lots of extra days these first two
weeks.
As it turned out I needed them.
Stage One Loading
Eloquence was listing badly and Kayackanoe was stern heavy. Even Scooby Do who rode on
the bow of the lead was nervous. I knew I had to stop somewhere soon and reload this but my
motto in town was always to “get going” because the hardest part of any Long Distance driv-
ing or journey I had done alone or with others was just getting out of town.
It seemed incredibly clear I had rushed and while I had a nice enough day again to “get going”
loading seemed to take hours and hours and while I might have exaggerated that, I knew Lori
was waiting on me.
In the end it was “dump and run” loading and it showed…..
