at the minimum; we simply work to ensure the money to purchase
alcohol! Religion is completely out of the picture until replaced by
A.A. later, as indicated by the dotted lines.
FIGURE 3. You just go into A.A. and the outline of the cross has
completely changed. While in Figure 2, fun was dominant; it’s been
replaced by a hint shadow (dotted lines). While religion, or A.A. now,
was completely missing in Figure 2, it is now completely dominant.
We are so serious in pursuing our sobriety, we’ve lost much of our
sense of humor and certainly our sense of having fun. Fun hasn’t yet
replaced our drunkenness. The work has fallen slightly from its side;
we work ourselves to death to please our bosses, our church leader,
or client. Love has improved, nevertheless, we are so busy with A.A.
we are still not valuing or family members enough.
However, no need be upset by this because our loved ones are so
grateful for our sobriety that they won’t be let down by a careless act.
FIGURE 4. The initial excitement for A.A. has subsided and we are
fast returning to the norm. Work and love are completely in line. Our
boss, clergy, and customer have duly been impressed by our sincerity
and we’re making it happen again the way it should be done. We found
a little more time for our loved ones and we’ve discovered that life
in A.A. is not as serious as we thought
We enjoy fishing, hunting, theater, dancing (without liquid courage),
field trips, gardening and our favorite road trips again...that have been
forgotten for so long.
Alcoholics Anonymous is still the dominant factor, but distraction
is finally getting some attention. Eventually, it can lead us to drink.
FIGURE 1. That which we enjoy a life well compensated with Love,
Work, Fun, and Religion (or A.A.)
The journey from Figure 3, passing through Figure 4,going back to
Figure 1 does not mean neglecting A.A. or our work on the «Twelve
Steps». It’s just that as we grow older in the group, we learn to
distribute our time more wisely. We’ve discovered that not everyone
wants to give up and lose far less time banging our heads against the
stone-wall of resistance. We are still doing the same amount of good
to others and to ourselves, but it requires only a fraction of the time
