the powerful, the famous or the lofty. He went straight to the humble,
the sick, the unfortunate. He went straight to the drunk who was
known as the «shame of the world».

We’ve frequently been told « You’ve been delivered a virtue beyond
friendship between your weak and trembling hands. You’ve been
given what has been denied to the most educated of men. Nor
scientists, nor statesmen, wives nor mothers, not even my priests
nor ministers have received this gift of healing other alcoholics, as I
have entrusted to you.

This gift must be used selflessly. It brings with it a serious
responsibility. Not a single day should seem too long. Don’t argue
that your time is too urgent.

No case must seem too painful. No task too hard, no effort too great. It
must be used with tolerance, because I haven’t limited its application
to any race, creed or sect. You can expect personal criticism, which
will be common for lack of appreciation, your luck will be ridiculed,
your motives wrongly judged.

You should be prepared for adversity, because what men call adversity
for you will be the stairs to climb the steps to the spiritual perfection.
Remember that in the exercise of this power you I won’t demand
anything of you beyond your own strength.

You weren’t selected for your exceptional talent. Always be wise
and may victory always accompany your efforts. Don’t contribute
it to your superiority, for you’ve only been able to make the climb
by the virtue of my gift. If I had wanted educated men to make this
mission happen, the power would’ve been entrusted to physicists
and scientists. If I had wanted eloquent men, many would’ve been
anxious to be chosen, because talking is the easiest way to use the
talents with which I endowed humanity. If I had wanted erudite-like
men, the world is
full of them, with better skills than you that would be more valuable.
