FACTORS THAT HELP TOWARDS A HAPPY SOBREITY
HUMILITY: True appreciation of the way things are, willingness to
face facts; recognition of our status as alcoholics; letting go of pride
and arrogance; understanding of the proper relationship between us
and a Higher Power, as well as between ourselves and our fellow men;
acceptance and practice of this relationship for twenty four hours.
HONESTY: Freedom from delusion; integrity of acts and thoughts;
sincere in our desire to recovery from alcoholism, willingness to
admit a mistake, equity in all our dealings with others, resist that first
drink taken secretly
FAITH: Safety, hope and confidence in the A.A. program, belief that
you can recover as other members are that practice the Twelve Steps
necessary for a judicious abstinence that leads to a happy sobriety;
willingness to turn to the help of a Higher Power.
STRENGTH: Right attitude that allows us to deal with our problems
and realities of life without depending on alcohol, strength to cope
with things we can not change, determination in keeping the attitude
to ask for God’s help for every problem (unpleasant or not) that can
make us turn to drunkenness; Fearlessness in the practice of faith,
humility, honesty and selflessness.
LOVE: Love is the miracle of continuous sobriety. Cultivating that
mental attitude is necessary as we develop our ability to be happy,
helpful and to be happy with ... our abstinence. Lack of love and
drunkenness go hand in hand.
SERVICE: Serving God and our fellow man is the key to A.A.’s
great success. Helping other alcoholics who need and want to be
helped gives us the grace and humility necessary to be happy in our
sobriety. By serving, egocentrism is fought and always reminds us of
our powerlessness against alcohol. Selfless and well-founded service
is the lifeblood of the A.A. group.
