n June 10, 1935, the first Bank of Sobriety of A.A. was founded
Oin Akron, Ohio. Its founders consisted of, a ruined broker at the
stock exchange on Wall Street named Bill W., and Bob S., a surgeon
without clientele whose Chairman was ... God.

This bank was founded without capital, however, currently has more
than 30,000 branches, distributed in over 90 countries and more than
a million good accounts. A lot of money is required to establish and
operate a bank.

Then you have to wait a year to receive dividends in the savings
accounts. In A.A.’s Bank of Sobriety, only deposits of alcoholics are
received who wish to deposit 24 hours of sobriety daily. In retum,
the bank pays them ... every 24 hours.

In all other banks in the world, the benefits are paid to people who
own an account. At the Bank of Sobriety, dividends are distributed
among different people. That way, the family members closest to the
alcoholic depositors receive «dividends of happiness and peace».
Their bosses and supervisors receive «dividends of responsibility and
employment». Those who posses the account, receive «dividends of
sobriety».
Once someone decides to open their account in this Bank of Sobriety,
they should keep depositing daily. Only with this daily deposit can one
cash checks of sobriety. Those who forget to make the daily deposit,
believing that just by opening the account or having made a deposit
yesterday, can cash a check today, may fall into writing a bad check
that can cost them dearly: a psych ward ... prison ... or premature death.

A.A.’s Bank of Sobriety is very liberal. It always has its doors open
to the new depositor, even for those returning bank depositors. These
depositors are given the opportunity to reopen their account, despite
their previous failures.
