8. You are not allowed to think that one or two drinks could improve
a difficult situation or at least make it more tolerable. Replace that
thought with this one: «One drink will make things worse, one drink
will end in drunkenness.»
9. Consider seeing a severely handicapped blind person and how that
person would be elated if they could solve their problem by simply
refraining from taking a drink today. Think how fortunate you are to
have such a small and simple problem.
10. Develop and check the joys of your sobriety as:
a) self condemnation
b) How good it is to be free from the fear of the consequences of
recently having been drunk or of a drunken time to come that you’ve
yet to have been able to avoid.
c) The satisfaction of having ridded yourself of the ‘bad tongues’
and of the mixed looks of pity and disregard from people.
11. Develop the POSITIVE joys of sobriety:
a) The simple ability to eat and sleep normal, wake up glad to
be alive, happy to be sober have been sober yesterday and have the
privilege to continue sober today.
b) The ability to face what life will throw at you with peace of
mind, self-respect, and the full potential of all your senses.
12. Develop the following association of ideas:
a) Associate drinking with all misery, shame and traumas that
you have known.
b) Think of alcohol as the only thing that can destroy your
newfound happiness and take away self-respect and peace of mind.
13. Develop the following mentalities of gratitude:
a) For all this can be yours at a low price.
b) For a drink you can redeem all the happiness sobriety gives
you.
c) For A.A. exists and you found it in time.
d) For you’re only a victim of a disease called alcoholism and not
a degenerate person nor addict by choice nor a person of questionable
sanity.
14. Find ways to help other alcoholics, remembering that the best
way to help others is to stay healthy and good yourself.
