       Eni spuds Mlima-1 well offshore Kenya






             KENYA       THE Italian major Eni has spudded the Mlima-1
                         well to seek crude oil and natural gas at Ken-
                         ya’s offshore Block L11A, located in the Lamu
                         sedimentary basin, using the Saipem 12000
                         drillship.
                           Kenya’s  Petroleum  Principal  Secretary
                         Andrew Kama said drilling had started on
                         December 28 and that the exercise, led by Eni,
                         should be completed in 40 days.
                           “The well is being drilled by Eni, TotalEn-
                         ergies [France] and Qatar Petroleum at a site
                         200 km from Msambweni in the coastal Kwale
                         county,” Kamau said in a telephone interview on
                         January 6.
                           “Mlima-1 is located 20 km west of the
                         Kibiko-1 well, drilled by Anadarko Petroleum
                         and classified as dry,” Kamau said. A safety
                         zone of 500 metres is being maintained around
                         Mlima-1 by a patrol vessel.
