Native Americans Day
This year on the second Monday in October, many Americans are celebrating Native American
Day. They are honouring and celebrating Natives and their culture.
Native Americans were first called “Indians” and were the first people to live in the United States.
5 When the first explorers arrived from Europe, there were Indians in the USA, from the Atlantic to
the Pacific, and from the Gulf of Mexico to Canada.
In 1968, Governor Reagan signed a resolution for a holiday called “American Indian Day”. Then in
1998, California declared “Native American Day” their official state holiday.
Traditionally, Americans support this day with learning initiatives on the traditions of Natives.
10 They share their cultural heritage with different activities, markets and reunions: the “pow wows”
where Natives dance, sing and socialise.
